Surgical robot built at UCSC featured in Enders Game movie
About 58 minutes into the new film Ender’s Game, the Raven II, a surgical robot developed at UCSC’s Bionics Lab, makes a cameo. (In the movie, it’s used to simulate brain surgery on the character Bonzo Madrid.)
Robotic surgery has the potential to enable new surgical procedures that are less invasive than existing techniques. In addition, telesurgery, in which the surgeon operates a robotic system from a remote location, offers the potential to provide better access to expert care in remote areas and the developing world.
Jacob Rosen, a professor of computer engineering, helped develop the Raven and Raven II (working with researchers at the University of Washington).
